December is one of the best months to wander around El Born and the Gothic Quarter: it’s cool but not cold, the narrow streets fill with lights and, a few minutes’ walk away, you’ll find the city’s most traditional Christmas market. Here’s a practical guide to enjoying Christmas from the neighbourhood.
When Is the Fira de Santa Llúcia 2026
The Fira de Santa Llúcia takes place every year on Avinguda de la Catedral, between the Gothic Quarter and El Born. In 2025 it ran from November 28 to December 23 and, although the organisers haven’t published the exact 2026 dates yet, a very similar calendar is expected. We’ll update this post as soon as they’re confirmed.
It’s named after Saint Lucy, whose feast day is December 13, and its first documented edition dates back to 1786. It’s still the big Christmas crafts and decorations fair in central Barcelona.

More Christmas Plans in and Around El Born
✨ Lights switch-on. Barcelona plans to switch on its Christmas lights on November 26, 2026. The streets of the centre stay lit until after Epiphany (January 6).
⛪ Nativity scene in Plaça de Sant Jaume. Every year the City Council sets up a nativity scene in the square, five minutes from the Cathedral. It’s usually a different artistic take each year, so it’s worth seeing in person.
🎶 Concerts at the Palau de la Música. The Palau programmes Christmas concerts in December. Check the schedule early: tickets for dates close to Christmas sell out fast. If you haven’t been yet, here’s our guide to visiting the Palau de la Música.
🏛️ A walk through El Born after dark. Passeig del Born, Santa Maria del Mar and Carrer de Montcada have a special charm on winter evenings, when it gets dark early. More ideas in things to do in El Born.
👑 Three Kings Parade (January 5). In Spain, the Three Wise Men bring the presents. They arrive by sea at the port and parade through the centre in the evening. The exact route is published a few days before.
Suggested Route: a Christmas Afternoon in El Born
- Fira de Santa Llúcia (mid-afternoon, while it’s still light and less crowded).
- Nativity scene in Plaça de Sant Jaume, a short walk from the Cathedral.
- A stroll around El Born: Santa Maria del Mar and Passeig del Born with the lights on.
- Gelato at La Palau, opposite the Palau de la Música, to round off the afternoon.
Ice Cream in Winter? Yes, and Here’s Why

Italian gelato is served at a warmer temperature than industrial ice cream and has less air whipped into it, so it’s creamier and doesn’t “freeze” your mouth. In December, after a walk around the market, it hits the spot just as it does in summer.
Our gelato is handmade by Menodiciotto, a workshop founded in Turin in 1986 by master gelato maker Luca Grassi, with a catalogue of over 80 natural flavours. La Palau has 25 to 30 of them in the display case, including gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free options.
